Site Assessment and Investigations

We have an outstanding team of environmental scientists and investigators that assesses industrial, residential, commercial, and open space properties to evaluate environmental status and health.   We benefit from an intimate knowledge of the federal, state, and local regulations, and employ up-to-date technologies (including satellite imagery and GIS). We have conducted over 2000 Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and Phase II Detailed Site Investigations to ASTM standards at sites in the U.S. and overseas. We have assessed a wide range of properties, including:

  • Transportation corridors
  • Manufacturing facilities
  • Power plants and substations
  • Vehicle maintenance facilities
  • Oil and gas fields
  • Pipelines and Refineries
  • Mines
  • Airports
  • Commercial properties
  • Residential properties

Our site assessments include such procedures as baseline data inventories, asbestos and lead surveys, indoor air quality evaluations, ground water monitoring, contaminant characterization, and soil gas surveys.

International Project Examples

Wind Park ESIAs - Walsh-Ecuador is conducting two ESIAs for the UNDP: a wind park on the island of Baltra and a transmission line that connects the wind park with the urban center of Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz.  The wind park and transmission lines are located within the Galapagos National Park. The ESIA process includes careful consideration of sensitive species such as the land iguana, various sea birds and esthetic impacts.  This wind project is part of larger effort by the UNDP and the Ecuadorian government to convert the archipelago to 100% sustainable energy.

Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for Exploration and Production, Yemen.  Walsh conducted an environmental and social impact assessment project for seismic exploration, exploration drilling, and field development in Block S-1 in Yemen, for Occidental Petroleum.  The ESIA evaluated the existing environmental and social conditions in the block, which is principally a large sand sea that does include previously existing oilfields.

Equator Principles Audit, Mexico and South Korea.  For a large foreign bank, Walsh conducted an Equator Principles audit to ensure companies involved in a major international project complied with the International Finance Corporation’s eight Performance Standards.  The Performance Standards ensure corporate social responsibility and best-practices are upheld for financed projects around the world.
