September 2007 - At The World Oil Awards reception in Houston, Walsh and PetroOriental were chosen as 1 of 4 finalists for the Health, Safety, and Environment/Sustainable Development Award for their project: Microhabitat Protection during Geophysical Exploration in High Diversity Tropical Rainforest. Microhabitats or Biologically Sensitive Areas (BSAs) include clay licks, nesting areas, animal dens, watering holes, fruiting trees and termite mounds. Technical staff and contractors from PetroOriental, along with biologists from universities, were brought together in making important real-time design decisions in the field. This participatory biodiversity management system for geophysical acquisition is a model for protection of BSAs in other high-sensitivity tropical rainforests. Winners of the award will be announced on October 17, 2007.

April 2006—Walsh and Occidental Petroleum were presented the award for Best Poster from the Division of Environmental Geology of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) at the association’s 2006 convention in Houston. Our poster, “Canopy Bridges Allow Arboreal Animals to Traverse Pipeline Corridors”, described Walsh’s innovative technique to provide pathways of migration for arboreal mammals in support of Oxy oil field development in northern Ecuador.
Hurricane Katrina Walsh assisted with the US EPA Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in the Jefferson, Vermillion, and Plaquemine Parishes in Louisiana.
Environmental Services for RTD’s FasTracks Program Walsh recently signed a $3 million contract with Regional Transportation District (RTD) to perform environmental services for RTD’s FasTracks Program. FasTracks is a voter-approved, $4.7 billion capital construction project for 9 rapid transit corridors in the seven-county Denver region. FasTracks will provide 119 miles of new and expanded rail transit, 31 new Park-n-Ride Facilities with 21,000 new parking spaces, many new light rail and commuter rail stations, and an enhanced bus network throughout the participating counties. FasTracks plans include a $560 million capital construction project at and near Denver’s Union Station.
Walsh/E & E AWARDED BLM CONTRACT FOR WORK IN CANYONS OF THE ANCIENTS NATIONAL MONUMENT PLANNING AREA Walsh and our parent company, Ecology & Environment, Inc., (E&E) were recently awarded a $770K contract to prepare a resource management plan (RMP) and environmental impact study in this high-profile monument area, located in Cortez, Colo. The monument is home to 5,000+ archaeologically sensitive areas and contains the highest density of archaeological sites in the nation. The RMP will guide BLM in decision-making about a range of management issues for roughly the next 15 years. It will address key issues and resources including cultural, oil and gas, recreational use, range management, special species status, livestock, transportation, and consultation with Native American tribes.
Hurricane Katrina Relief Walsh is currently assisting with the US EPA Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in the Jefferson, Vermillion, and Plaquemine Parishes in Louisiana. We have been involved in a variety of activities associated with the management of hazardous materials in these areas. Activities we have assisted with include interaction with residents, location of chemical containers, and classification and identification of unknown materials in preparation for proper disposal. The project has given Walsh an invaluable opportunity to aid in restoring the devastated area and to work closely with government agencies and other companies associated with the cleanup.
Walsh and EnCana win 2004 Environmental Award. Walsh Ecuador and EnCana were awarded the Environmental Award for the project Reducing the Footprint of 3D Seismic in the Tropical Rainforest of Ecuador.
Walsh and Occidental win 2003 Environmental Award. The Energy Institute awarded the 2003 International Petroleum Environmental award to Walsh Ecuador and Occidental Petroleum for developing "Canopy Bridges." On the Eden-Yuturi Pipeline, being built in the Ecuadorian Amazon, 42 km are being routed through primary rainforest. Clearing of pipeline Rights-of-Way in the rainforest normally results in habitat fragmentation for arboreal animals. Walsh and Oxy designed and incorporated canopy bridges where the ROW was narrowed, keeping the rainforest canopy intact and allowing arboreal monkeys to traverse the pipeline ROW. |
